Not Scared Anymore

This Sunday here in Australia, people will celebrate Father's Day. They do it on a different day than that in North America. Usually, I get scared to go to church on this day. I get annoying feelings, begrudging feelings about being in church on a Father's Day. I do not like going to church when I can predict the sermon.

If you are a father and you are going to an Evangelical/Pentecostal church, I can predict the sermon topic you will hear this Sunday, I can bet you the subject of the sermon you will hear -- is about you, the father of the house. Well, be prepared for a lecture, don't say I did not forewarn you.

As for me, I am free, free, at last...

Lito,

You know it's nice when the pastor gives Jesus a Sunday off. I'm sure that Jesus was working hard for the other 51 weeks, well maybe 50 if you give Jesus the day off for Mother's Day. Well anyway, I'm sure that the pastors are preaching Christ crucified the remaining weeks of the year.

Steve,

How I wish it were so! My experience says otherwise. It will take time but as we keep at calling them in line, I am hopeful they will turn around. God is merciful, for now, there is so much work to do.

Lito,

Since Jesus will be given a holiday (not a Holy Day), on Father's Day for many "evangelical" preachers, it would be interesting to compare how these pastors preach their Father's Day "message" to their Mother's Day message. Does the pastors preach Law to the fathers and gospel to mothers?

Steve,

My experience is that the dads are heavily criticized on Father's Day, but moms get praised on Mothers Day. Now is it any wonder why men are staying away from church? Men get the Law but no Gospel.

On both days Jesus gets a day off. The thing though is that they send Jesus for a holiday for most of the 52 Sundays of the week.

So,did you hear about you as a father or God the Father from your pastor today?

Steve,

Hehe, I heard about Jesus being the person who invites those who are not able to pay him back to his party, his banquet. It was on Luke 14:1-14. I heard I am the lame, the blind that Jesus invites to be with him because I am not able to pay him back. It was about Jesus - they did not give him a day off.

But then again Steve, I was not in a Pentecostal church this Sunday.

I wonder if those who visit this blog could share their experience on a Father's day Service.

PS. I will be referring to your Law/Gospel article in subsequent posts.
