The Chief

The Westminister Shorter Catechism has this.

Question. 1. What is the chief end of man?
Answer. Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

However I read this quote from one of my books...

But the chief worship of God is the Preaching of the Gospel.

Do you agree with this or do you disagree? Why? This is not a trick question. Hmm, ok, it may be.

Perhaps the two can be one? If the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever, then the way that God is glorified is when His Gospel is proclaimed to sinners so that by faith they receive His free and full forgiveness. Does it work?

Pr. Will,

That is quite an insight.

I have not thought of it that way because from Calvinistic ears, the first one gets the Cross faded.

Thanks I think the second controls the first.

I am sure you have encountered the 2nd in your readings.

Uh, yea. Once or twice. ;)

Even more at the heart of the matter is when the true cultus is defined as "to believe in Him and receive from Him blessings. He declares this to be the true divine service." (Ap IV:107)

O.H.

Yes I was for about 4-5 years. But I was more like a Continental Calvy, I had great problesm with WCF. I was a Penty too and for 4-5 years was hunting for a confession I believe accurate to the Scripture as I can determine.

And what's the best way to glorify God? To worship God and preach the gospel of course.
